PART 6 — THE MAN WHO KNEW MY FATHER

PART 6 — THE MAN WHO KNEW MY FATHER

Daniel stared at the message until the screen dimmed.

Then he tapped it again.

As if the words might change.

As if his eyes had misunderstood.

But they didn’t.

The message was still there.

Your father’s best friend was.

Six words.

Six words that opened a door Daniel never wanted to walk through.

Because his father had been gone for fifteen years.

And for fifteen years, Daniel had believed he understood the man he lost.

Not perfectly.

Not completely.

But enough.

His father had been strict.

Quiet.

A man who believed emotions should be controlled and problems should be solved without asking for help.

He wasn’t the kind of father who hugged often.

He wasn’t the kind of man who explained himself.

But Daniel had always believed one thing:

His father was honest.

Now that belief was cracking.

“Dad?”

Daniel turned.

Leo stood in the hallway.

Small.

Tired.

But home.

For a second, Daniel forgot everything.

The message.

The secrets.

The past.

He walked over and kneeled.

“Hey, buddy.”

Leo looked at his face.

“You’re sad.”

Daniel forced a smile.

“No.”

Leo tilted his head.

“You always say that when you are.”

That hurt.

Because children noticed everything.

Things adults spent years hiding.

Daniel touched his hair.

“I’m just thinking.”

“About Uncle Adrián?”

Daniel froze.

“Yes.”

Leo looked down.

“He said something.”

Daniel’s heart changed rhythm.

“What did he say?”

Leo hesitated.

“Before you came.”

Daniel sat down.

“Tell me.”

Leo looked nervous.

“He said my grandpa left something behind.”

Daniel went still.

“Your grandpa?”

Leo nodded.

“He said my dad would never understand.”

A cold feeling moved through Daniel.

“What else?”

Leo tried to remember.

“He said…”

The boy frowned.

“He said the truth was under the house before I was even born.”

Daniel didn’t move.

Because that sentence confirmed everything.

This was bigger than Adrián.

Bigger than Patricia.

Someone had been planning this for years.

The next morning, Daniel went to see the only person who could answer.

His father’s closest friend.

Miguel Ortega.

For years, Miguel had been like family.

He attended Daniel’s graduation.

He stood beside him at his wedding.

He brought gifts when Leo was born.

When Daniel’s father died, Miguel was the person who helped arrange everything.

He was the man Daniel trusted.

The man everyone trusted.

And now…

He was the man Daniel needed to question.

Miguel lived outside the city.

A quiet house.

A quiet neighborhood.

The kind of place where nothing dramatic ever seemed to happen.

Daniel hated that.

Because he had learned something.

The worst secrets rarely hide in dark places.

Sometimes they hide behind perfect lawns and friendly smiles.

Miguel opened the door.

And his expression changed the second he saw Daniel.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Like he had been expecting him.

“Daniel.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Can I come in?”

A pause.

Then Miguel stepped aside.

“Of course.”

The house smelled like coffee and old books.

Exactly how Daniel remembered.

That almost made it worse.

Because it felt normal.

Like the world hadn’t been turned upside down.

Miguel poured two cups.

Daniel didn’t touch his.

“You know why I’m here.”

Miguel looked at him.

“Yes.”

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

“You knew I would find out?”

Miguel sighed.

“Eventually.”

“Eventually?”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“My son was kidnapped.”

Miguel looked down.

“I know.”

“And you’re talking about eventually?”

Silence.

Then Miguel said:

“Your father made mistakes.”

Daniel froze.

Not what he expected.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

A confession.

“What mistakes?”

Miguel looked older suddenly.

Much older.

“The kind people make when they think they are protecting their family.”

Daniel stared.

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Make him sound like a victim.”

Miguel didn’t answer.

Because maybe Daniel was right.

Maybe nobody was innocent.

“My father knew about Adrián.”

Daniel’s voice was low.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Miguel looked away.

“Years.”

Daniel felt anger rising.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing?”

Miguel closed his eyes.

“I promised him.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You promised my father while my son was missing?”

“I didn’t know Leo was involved.”

“That doesn’t matter!”

His voice filled the room.

“You knew something was wrong.”

Miguel didn’t argue.

Because he did.

Finally, Miguel walked to a cabinet.

He opened it.

Pulled out an old file.

And placed it on the table.

“This is what Adrián wanted.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside were documents.

Financial records.

Names.

Dates.

Photos.

And one name repeated over and over.

A company.

A company Daniel recognized.

Sterling Holdings.

His father’s company.

“What is this?”

Miguel sat down.

“Your father discovered corruption.”

Daniel looked at him.

“From who?”

Miguel was silent.

Then:

“Everyone.”

The answer shocked him.

“Everyone?”

“Your father built something successful.”

A pause.

“But success attracts people who want to control it.”

Miguel pointed to the documents.

“Adrián was moving money.”

“Illegal money?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked through the papers.

“And my father found out.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he expose him?”

Miguel’s face changed.

Because the answer was painful.

“He tried.”

A pause.

“And that’s why he died.”

Daniel froze.

The room went silent.

“What?”

Miguel looked at him.

“Your father’s death wasn’t an accident.”

Daniel stepped back.

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

His voice became sharper.

“You’re lying.”

“I wish I was.”

Daniel stared.

The world he knew was disappearing piece by piece.

“My father died in a car accident.”

Miguel nodded slowly.

“That’s what everyone believed.”

Daniel felt sick.

Because all his life he had accepted that story.

The sudden crash.

The bad weather.

The impossible timing.

A tragedy.

Not a murder.

“Who did it?”

Miguel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Daniel already understood.

“Adrián.”

Miguel shook his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“Adrián was involved.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“But?”

Miguel looked at him.

“He was working for someone.”

The room went completely still.

Daniel whispered:

“Who?”

Miguel looked terrified.

For the first time.

Actually terrified.

“Someone who still has power.”

A pause.

“Someone who knew your father’s secrets.”

Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Both men looked at it.

Neither moved.

Then it stopped.

A second later…

A message appeared.

Daniel opened it.

One sentence.

STOP ASKING QUESTIONS.

Then another.

A photo.

Miguel’s house.

Taken from outside.

Taken moments ago.

Daniel looked toward the window.

Miguel stood up.

His face pale.

“They found you.”

Daniel turned.

“Who?”

Miguel didn’t answer.

Because the lights in the house went out.

And from outside…

A car door closed.

Then footsteps approached.

Slow.

Certain.

Someone wasn’t hiding anymore.

May you like

Someone was coming inside.

TO BE CONTINUED…
