PART 2 — THE BEAR THAT WAS NEVER A GIFT

PART 2 — THE BEAR THAT WAS NEVER A GIFT

For one second, I couldn’t move.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Just… afraid.

And that scared me more than anything.

“What did you mean by that?”

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Daniel looked past me.

Toward Lily.

Toward my brother.

Toward the metal tin sitting on the garage floor.

Then he swallowed.

“Emily…”

“No.”

I stepped in front of Lily.

“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.”

Mark moved closer.

“Daniel, what did you know about that bear?”

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

And then Daniel said something I never expected.

“I didn’t know what they put inside.”

My heart stopped.

“They?”

I repeated.

“Who is they?”

Daniel looked down.

And for the first time since I met him…

My husband looked like someone who had been hiding from a truth he was terrified to face.

“My parents.”

The room went cold.

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because my brain couldn’t accept it.

“Your parents sent a camera inside a teddy bear?”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“It wasn’t supposed to be like this.”

Mark’s expression hardened.

“Explain.”

Daniel looked at Lily.

His eyes softened.

“I never wanted her involved.”

That sentence destroyed something inside me.

Because it meant there was something.

Something real.

“What are you talking about?”

I asked.

Daniel sat down slowly.

“Six months ago, my father asked me for access to Lily’s photos.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He said your mother wanted updated pictures.”

“And?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I thought it was harmless.”

Mark interrupted.

“Until what?”

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Until I found out they weren’t just collecting pictures.”

My hands tightened.

“What were they doing?”

He looked at me.

“They were watching.”

A chill ran through me.

“Watching who?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t have to.

“Me?”

I whispered.

He nodded.

The betrayal hurt worse than fear.

Because I had spent years believing Daniel was the person who would protect us.

“Why?”

He looked away.

“My father has been obsessed with proving something.”

“What?”

“That you were hiding money from him.”

I stared.

“What?”

Daniel shook his head.

“He thinks your family inheritance was bigger than you told everyone.”

I almost laughed.

Because it was so ridiculous.

So insane.

“My family?”

I pointed at myself.

“Your father sent a spy toy to our daughter because he thinks I have money?”

Daniel’s silence answered.

Mark looked at him.

“And you let this happen?”

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“I swear.”

“I found out about the bear today.”

“Today?”

I turned toward him.

“When Lily opened it?”

He nodded.

“Then why didn’t you stop me?”

His face collapsed.

“Because I was scared.”

There it was again.

Fear.

But unlike Daniel…

I wasn’t scared anymore.

I was furious.

Mark’s phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“What?”

I asked.

He turned the phone toward us.

A message from the police department.

A photo.

A search result.

The bear wasn’t just a toy.

Inside the eye was a miniature camera.

Inside the body was a microphone.

And hidden beneath the stuffing…

Was a tracking device.

My knees went weak.

“They tracked my daughter?”

Mark nodded.

“Yes.”

I looked upstairs.

At my six-year-old girl.

The child who trusted people.

The child who smiled because she thought a teddy bear meant love.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Mark whispered:

“Don’t answer.”

But I did.

A man’s voice came through.

Calm.

Old.

Familiar.

“Emily.”

I recognized it immediately.

My father-in-law.

“What did you do?”

My voice shook.

A pause.

Then he said:

“You opened something that wasn’t meant for you.”

My blood turned cold.

“Where is my daughter?”

He laughed softly.

A sound that made my skin crawl.

“You still don’t understand.”

“What?”

His voice lowered.

“The bear wasn’t there to watch Lily.”

I froze.

“Then why?”

The answer came.

And it changed everything.

“It was there to find out who Lily’s real father is.”

The line went dead.

Nobody spoke.

Because there was one question none of us wanted to ask.

What did my father-in-law know…

May you like

that I didn’t?
