PART 5 — THE SECRET BEFORE LILY WAS BORN

PART 5 — THE SECRET BEFORE LILY WAS BORN

The call ended.

But I still held the phone against my ear.

Waiting.

Hoping.

As if Lily might suddenly say my name again.

“Mommy…”

Her tiny voice stayed in my head.

Mark looked at me through the mirror.

“Emily?”

I couldn’t answer.

I just whispered:

“She’s alive.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Relief passed over his face for half a second.

Then guilt returned.

“They’re my parents.”

His voice cracked.

“I should have seen this.”

I looked at him.

For the first time that night…

I didn’t see anger.

I saw a man who realized the people who raised him were capable of something terrible.

“We find her first.”

I said quietly.

“Then we deal with everything else.”

The police followed Daniel’s directions toward the old property.

A place I had never heard about.

A place hidden from everyone.

The farther we drove, the darker it became.

The city lights disappeared.

The roads became empty.

Then Mark received another update.

“They’re there.”

My heart jumped.

“Lily?”

“They detected movement.”

I grabbed the door handle.

“Go.”

The cars stopped a few hundred feet away.

Officers moved quietly.

Mark stopped me.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“She’s my daughter.”

“I know.”

His voice softened.

“But if they panic…”

He didn’t finish.

He didn’t have to.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

“We’ll get her.”

I hated that I needed reassurance from him.

But I did.

The officers moved forward.

Minutes passed.

Each second felt impossible.

Then…

A sound.

A door opening.

Everyone froze.

A police officer signaled.

The building was clear.

We rushed inside.

The old house smelled like dust.

Old wood.

And something familiar.

Perfume.

My mother-in-law’s perfume.

I followed the smell.

Then I heard it.

“Mommy?”

My heart shattered.

“Lily!”

I ran.

She was sitting on a chair in the back room.

A blanket around her shoulders.

Crying.

But alive.

I grabbed her.

I held her so tightly she laughed through tears.

“Mommy can’t breathe.”

I whispered.

“I don’t care.”

She cried.

“I missed you.”

I kissed her hair.

Her forehead.

Her cheeks.

Everywhere.

Making sure she was real.

Then I noticed something.

She wasn’t alone.

My mother-in-law was standing in the corner.

Calm.

Almost peaceful.

“How could you?”

My voice shook.

She looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“You don’t understand.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“You kidnapped my child.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Her eyes filled.

“I protected her.”

I froze.

“What?”

She stepped closer.

“Lily was never in danger with us.”

I held my daughter tighter.

“Stay away.”

She stopped.

“You think I’m the monster.”

“Yes.”

The answer came instantly.

She looked hurt.

Then angry.

“Because you don’t know the truth.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What truth?”

She looked at him.

“You were never supposed to raise her.”

His face changed.

“What does that mean?”

She looked at Lily.

“Ask your wife.”

My blood ran cold.

I turned to Daniel.

Then back to her.

“What are you talking about?”

She smiled sadly.

“Tell him, Emily.”

My entire body froze.

“Tell him what happened before you met him.”

I couldn’t speak.

Daniel looked at me.

Confused.

Afraid.

“Emily?”

I swallowed.

Because there was a secret.

A secret I had buried.

A secret I never wanted him to know.

The room became silent.

And my daughter looked up at me.

“Mommy?”

My eyes filled with tears.

Because after everything…

After the cameras.

After the kidnapping.

After all the lies…

The biggest secret wasn’t theirs.

May you like

It was mine.
