PART 8 — THE SECRET DANIEL NEVER TOLD ME

PART 8 — THE SECRET DANIEL NEVER TOLD ME

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The officer’s words hung in the air.

“The vehicle belongs to Daniel Carter.”

I looked at my husband.

He looked back at me.

And for the first time…

I didn’t know what I was seeing.

“Daniel?”

My voice came out quietly.

He immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“Your car was found there.”

“I know.”

“Then explain.”

His mouth opened.

Then closed.

That hesitation.

That tiny moment.

It hurt more than any answer.

Mark stepped closer.

“Daniel.”

His voice was serious.

“What were you doing there?”

Daniel looked down.

“I wasn’t.”

The officer interrupted.

“Mr. Carter, we need the truth.”

Daniel ran his hand through his hair.

He looked exhausted.

Broken.

Then he said:

“I followed him.”

Everyone froze.

“Who?”

I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“Jason.”

My heart sank.

“You knew he was alive?”

He nodded slowly.

“For two months.”

The pain hit instantly.

Two months.

Another secret.

Another thing he kept from me.

I laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“Everyone knew something except me.”

“Emily…”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“My in-laws knew.”

“My husband knew.”

“Everyone was making decisions about my daughter.”

My eyes filled.

“And nobody trusted me.”

Daniel looked destroyed.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.”

Silence.

Then Daniel finally told the truth.

“When Jason contacted me…”

I looked up.

“He didn’t threaten me.”

“He warned me.”

I frowned.

“About what?”

Daniel swallowed.

“He said your daughter was in danger.”

My entire body froze.

“What?”

“He said someone was using him.”

“Someone bigger.”

Mark frowned.

“Who?”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.”

Nobody believed that.

Not completely.

Because there was one thing we had all forgotten.

The teddy bear.

The camera.

The recordings.

Someone had planned everything.

Then my mother-in-law suddenly spoke.

“Richard.”

Everyone turned.

I frowned.

“Who is Richard?”

Her face was pale.

“The man who managed the trust.”

Daniel froze.

“My father’s old accountant?”

She nodded.

“He knew about the money.”

Mark immediately grabbed his phone.

“Wait.”

He searched something.

Then his expression changed.

“What?”

I asked.

He looked up.

“Richard disappeared three days ago.”

My stomach dropped.

Three days.

Exactly when the bear arrived.

Exactly when everything started.

The pieces were moving.

Jason.

The trust.

The bear.

The kidnapping.

But one piece still didn’t fit.

The phone.

The message.

“Now you know I’m alive.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Where is Jason?”

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“I met him.”

My breath stopped.

“When?”

“Last night.”

The room went silent.

“You saw him?”

Daniel nodded.

“Before the bear arrived.”

My voice shook.

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because he came to warn me.”

“Warn you about what?”

Daniel’s face turned serious.

“He told me someone was going to take Lily.”

A cold feeling spread through me.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Because I already knew the answer.

Fear.

Fear of losing everything.

Daniel whispered:

“Because he also told me something else.”

I waited.

“What?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“He said…”

“He said Lily wasn’t the target.”

A pause.

“She was the key.”

Nobody understood.

Until the officer’s radio interrupted.

A new message came through.

“Found another device.”

Everyone turned.

The officer looked at us.

“It was hidden inside the teddy bear.”

My blood ran cold.

“But we already found the camera.”

He shook his head.

“This one is different.”

“What is it?”

He looked at the evidence bag.

And said:

“A voice recorder.”

My stomach twisted.

“Recorded when?”

The officer checked the timestamp.

His face changed.

“Today.”

Silence.

The bear was still recording.

Even after we found it.

Then the officer pressed play.

Static.

Then a voice.

A voice none of us expected.

My voice.

My own voice.

From earlier that day.

But the recording wasn’t from inside the house.

It was from somewhere else.

And then…

A second voice appeared.

Jason.

Whispering:

“Emily still doesn’t know the truth.”

A pause.

Then another voice.

A woman’s voice.

A voice I recognized.

My mother.

And she said:

“Good.”

“Keep it that way.”

My blood turned to ice.

Because my mother…

May you like

was involved.
