PART 6 — THE TRUTH I HID FROM DANIEL

PART 6 — THE TRUTH I HID FROM DANIEL

Nobody spoke.

Not the officers.

Not Mark.

Not Daniel.

Not even my mother-in-law.

Everyone was waiting for me.

Waiting for the truth I had spent six years running from.

Daniel stared at me.

His voice was quiet.

“Emily…”

A pause.

“What is she talking about?”

I looked at Lily.

My little girl.

The reason I kept going.

The reason I survived every difficult day.

Then I looked at Daniel.

The man who had loved her like his own since she was born.

The man who had stayed up all night when she had fevers.

The man who taught her how to ride a bike.

The man who deserved to know.

“I was going to tell you.”

My voice cracked.

Daniel laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because he was hurt.

“When?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because there was no good answer.

My mother-in-law crossed her arms.

“You see?”

“She lied to you from the beginning.”

Mark immediately stepped forward.

“Enough.”

She looked at him.

“You don’t know the whole story.”

“No.”

Mark’s voice was cold.

“But I know kidnapping a child isn’t how you solve problems.”

She looked away.

Daniel looked at me again.

“Emily.”

His eyes filled.

“Is Lily mine?”

That question hurt more than anything.

I whispered:

“Yes.”

His expression changed.

Confusion.

Pain.

Relief.

All at once.

“Yes, she’s yours.”

“Then what is she talking about?”

I closed my eyes.

“Before you…”

I swallowed.

“Before you and I met…”

The words felt heavy.

“I was married.”

Daniel went still.

“I know.”

He whispered.

“I told you I was divorced.”

“Yes.”

“But you never told me about…”

He looked at Lily.

“Her biological father.”

Silence.

I nodded.

“His name was Jason.”

Daniel looked away.

Trying to process.

“I was young.”

“I made mistakes.”

“Jason and I weren’t good together.”

My voice became quieter.

“He left when I was pregnant.”

Lily held my hand.

Not understanding.

But feeling the sadness.

“I raised her alone.”

“I didn’t know where he was.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Then why hide it?”

Because that was the question I hated most.

“Because when I met you…”

I cried.

“You were the first person who looked at Lily like she was already yours.”

Daniel’s eyes softened.

“I was scared.”

“Scared that if you knew…”

“You would leave.”

He shook his head slowly.

“You should have trusted me.”

I nodded.

“You’re right.”

And that was the truth.

But then something happened.

A police officer interrupted.

“Sorry.”

Everyone turned.

He was holding a small evidence bag.

Inside was a phone.

“We found this hidden in the room.”

My mother-in-law’s face changed.

The officer continued.

“It appears to belong to someone else.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Do you recognize the name?”

He showed the screen.

A contact list.

One name highlighted.

Jason Miller.

My blood froze.

“No.”

I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Jason?”

I couldn’t breathe.

Because Jason had been gone for six years.

I had searched.

I had called.

I had tried everything.

He was gone.

But now…

His phone was in the same room where my daughter was taken.

Mark took the phone.

“Wait.”

He opened the last messages.

Everyone watched.

The first message:

“The child is ready.”

Second:

“The mother doesn’t know yet.”

Third:

“Tonight changes everything.”

My hands started shaking.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily…”

A terrible thought formed.

My in-laws didn’t take Lily because they thought she was theirs.

They were working with someone.

Someone from my past.

Someone who knew the truth.

Someone who wanted my daughter.

Then the phone received a new message.

The screen lit up.

One sentence appeared.

“You found the phone. Good.”

Everyone froze.

Then another message came.

“Now you know I’m alive.”

The room went silent.

Because only one person could have sent it.

Jason.

Lily’s biological father.

And the man who disappeared six years ago…

May you like

had just announced he was coming back.
