PART 4 — THE RACE TO FIND LILY

PART 4 — THE RACE TO FIND LILY

I don’t remember leaving the house.

I only remember the sound of my own heartbeat.

The empty room.

The note.

The terrible silence where my daughter’s voice should have been.

“No.”

I kept saying it.

Over and over.

“No, no, no…”

Daniel grabbed my shoulders.

“Emily, look at me.”

I pushed him away.

“Find her.”

My voice broke.

“Just find my daughter.”

Mark was already moving.

He grabbed his phone.

“I’m calling every unit nearby.”

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Did your father have any place he could take her?”

Daniel’s face went pale.

A few seconds passed.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.”

My eyes snapped toward him.

“What?”

“There’s an old property.”

“Outside the city.”

“My father used it for private meetings.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

Daniel looked destroyed.

“Because I thought it was abandoned.”

I stared at him.

“You thought?”

“I didn’t know.”

But I couldn’t hear excuses anymore.

Not now.

Not when my little girl was somewhere with people who had planned this.

Mark stepped closer.

“Address.”

Daniel gave it.

Mark immediately sent it to the police.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily, listen.”

“They might want something.”

“People who plan things like this usually don’t just disappear.”

My hands trembled.

“What do they want?”

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew.

The truth.

The secret.

Whatever they believed Lily could reveal.

Forty minutes later, we were driving.

Mark behind the wheel.

Daniel beside me.

The police following.

I stared out the window.

Thinking about Lily.

Her first steps.

Her first words.

The way she always asked if the moon followed our car.

And I remembered something.

The bear.

The way she said:

“Mommy, it looked at me.”

She knew.

A six-year-old child knew something was wrong before all of us.

I turned toward Daniel.

“Why did your father choose a teddy bear?”

He looked confused.

“What?”

“A bear.”

“The camera.”

“The tracker.”

“Why send it as a gift?”

Daniel was silent.

Then his face changed.

“Because…”

“What?”

“Because they needed Lily to accept it.”

I waited.

“They needed something she would keep close.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Not just a camera.”

Daniel looked at me.

“A listening device.”

My stomach turned.

They weren’t only watching her.

They were listening.

To everything.

Our conversations.

Our home.

Our secrets.

Then Mark suddenly spoke.

“Everyone quiet.”

He looked at his phone.

“What?”

I asked.

“The police found something.”

My heart jumped.

“Lily?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

My hope disappeared.

“The bear.”

I frowned.

“What about it?”

“They found a second device.”

Daniel looked confused.

“A second one?”

Mark nodded.

“This one was hidden differently.”

He looked at me.

“It recorded more than video.”

I felt sick.

“What did it record?”

Mark hesitated.

Then answered:

“Audio.”

The car went silent.

Then he played a file.

Static.

Then voices.

My own voice.

From the night before.

Me and Daniel talking in the kitchen.

But then…

Another voice.

A whisper.

A voice I recognized.

My father-in-law.

He had been listening.

The recording continued.

His voice:

“Soon we’ll know.”

Another voice:

“Are you sure she won’t notice?”

My mother-in-law.

Then:

“Emily is emotional.”

“She won’t think clearly.”

My hands curled into fists.

But then…

A sentence made my blood run cold.

My father-in-law said:

“Once we confirm the child is mine…”

The recording stopped.

Nobody breathed.

Daniel looked at me.

“What did he say?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because the meaning was clear.

My in-laws weren’t trying to prove Lily wasn’t Daniel’s.

They believed…

Lily belonged to them.

And then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

This time…

I answered.

A little girl’s voice came through.

“Mommy?”

My entire body froze.

“Lily?”

A small sob.

“Mommy, I’m scared.”

I started crying.

“Baby, where are you?”

Silence.

Then a man took the phone.

My father-in-law.

“Emily.”

My voice shook.

“Where is my daughter?”

His answer was calm.

“She’s safe.”

I closed my eyes.

“Let me talk to her.”

A pause.

Then he said:

“You can.”

My heart stopped.

“But first…”

The line went quiet.

Then:

“You need to know why she was never supposed to be yours.”

The call ended.

And the police car sped faster toward the unknown location.

Because now we weren’t just rescuing Lily.

May you like

We were uncovering a secret that had been hidden since before she was born.
