PART 9 — THE PERSON I NEVER SUSPECTED

PART 9 — THE PERSON I NEVER SUSPECTED

The recording stopped.

But nobody moved.

My mother’s voice.

The one person I believed would always protect me.

The one person I called when life became too heavy.

The one person who held Lily after she was born.

She was involved.

“No.”

I whispered.

It was the only word my mind could form.

“No, that’s not possible.”

Daniel looked at me.

His expression wasn’t angry.

It was scared.

“Emily…”

I shook my head.

“She wouldn’t.”

Mark carefully placed the recorder on the table.

“Listen.”

“No.”

My voice broke.

“You don’t understand.”

“I know my mother.”

But even as I said it…

A terrible thought appeared.

Did I?

Because suddenly, memories started changing.

Small things.

Tiny details.

Things I ignored.

The questions my mother asked about Lily.

The way she always wanted to know where we were.

The way she reacted whenever Jason’s name came up.

I had explained it all away.

Because she was my mother.

Then my phone rang.

Mom.

Everyone looked at the screen.

Nobody spoke.

I answered.

“Hello?”

For a few seconds…

Nothing.

Then:

“Emily.”

Her voice.

Calm.

Gentle.

Like always.

My eyes filled.

“Mom?”

A pause.

“Where are you?”

She asked.

I froze.

Not:

“Are you okay?”

Not:

“Did you find Lily?”

Where are you?

She knew something.

“Why?”

I whispered.

Another pause.

Then she said:

“Because you need to hear the truth.”

My heart started racing.

“What truth?”

Her voice cracked.

“The truth about Lily.”

I looked at my daughter.

She was holding onto my hand.

My little girl.

My whole world.

“What about her?”

My mother sighed.

“I never wanted this to happen.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What did you do?”

Silence.

Then:

“I helped Jason disappear.”

The room went still.

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?”

My mother started crying.

“He didn’t leave you.”

“He was forced to run.”

I felt dizzy.

“Why?”

She whispered:

“Because of Richard.”

Everyone looked at each other.

Richard.

Again.

The missing accountant.

The person connected to the trust.

My mother continued:

“He found out Richard was stealing from the account.”

I frowned.

“Jason?”

“Yes.”

“Jason discovered everything.”

My mother’s voice shook.

“And Richard threatened him.”

“To keep quiet.”

“But Jason refused.”

I looked at Daniel.

Everything was changing.

My mother continued:

“Jason came to me because he knew you wouldn’t believe him.”

My chest tightened.

“He asked me to protect you.”

“Protect Lily.”

“Protect the money.”

I whispered:

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Her answer broke something inside me.

“Because I was afraid.”

Again.

Fear.

Everyone was afraid.

Everyone made choices for me.

But nobody asked me.

“What happened next?”

I asked.

My mother cried.

“Richard found out.”

“He knew Lily was connected to the trust.”

I looked at my daughter.

“How?”

Silence.

Then my mother said:

“Because Lily’s name is on the documents.”

I froze.

“What documents?”

“The original trust papers.”

She continued:

“Your father left everything for Lily.”

Not me.

Not anyone else.

Lily.

My daughter.

The money.

The secret.

The reason everyone was fighting.

Then I remembered something.

The teddy bear.

The camera.

The tracking device.

It wasn’t just about watching us.

It was about finding the documents.

“Where are they?”

I asked.

My mother went silent.

Too long.

“Mom.”

Finally, she whispered:

“Hidden where nobody would look.”

“Where?”

Her voice became barely audible.

“Inside the teddy bear.”

Everyone froze.

I looked toward the evidence bag.

The brown teddy bear.

The birthday gift.

The thing that started everything.

The bear wasn’t just watching Lily.

It was carrying the biggest secret of her life.

Then the police officer suddenly grabbed the recorder.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

He replayed the last few seconds.

The recording wasn’t finished.

There was another voice.

A man’s voice.

Very quiet.

Almost hidden.

And he said:

“Good job, Patricia.”

My mother froze.

Because that name wasn’t random.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was my mother’s real name.

And then the final words came through.

“The girl is safe.”

“But now we need the mother.”

The line went dead.

My blood turned cold.

Because whoever was behind this…

was no longer coming for Lily.

May you like

They were coming for me.
