PART 7 — THE MAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE PAST

PART 7 — THE MAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE PAST

The message stayed on the screen.

One sentence.

Seven words.

But it changed everything.

“Now you know I’m alive.”

I stared at the phone.

My fingers went numb.

Alive.

The word I never expected to see.

Because for six years, I believed Jason had disappeared.

Not because I wanted him gone.

Because I had no choice.

I searched.

I called.

I asked everyone who knew him.

Nothing.

He vanished the same week he promised he would come back.

And now…

He was here.

Mark looked at the phone.

“Can we trace the number?”

The officer nodded.

“We’re trying.”

Daniel stood silently.

Too silently.

I looked at him.

“Daniel…”

He didn’t answer.

His eyes were fixed on the phone.

On Jason’s name.

I understood.

He wasn’t angry only because I hid the truth.

He was scared.

Because another man had returned.

A man connected to Lily.

I stepped closer.

“Daniel, listen to me.”

He finally looked at me.

“I never wanted him in her life.”

He swallowed.

“But he’s her father.”

“Yes.”

I whispered.

“And I’m sorry I hid it.”

A long silence.

Then he asked the question that broke my heart.

“Did you ever think he would come back?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Never?”

“No.”

The answer was honest.

But before he could respond…

The phone buzzed again.

Everyone turned.

Another message.

“You’re blaming the wrong people.”

My blood ran cold.

Another message appeared.

“Your in-laws didn’t steal Lily.”

Then:

“They were trying to protect her.”

Nobody moved.

I looked at my mother-in-law.

She lowered her eyes.

For the first time…

She looked broken.

“Is that true?”

I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Tell me!”

My voice echoed through the room.

She slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

I couldn’t believe it.

“You kidnapped my daughter to protect her?”

She cried quietly.

“I knew Jason was coming back.”

“How?”

She looked at Daniel.

“Because he contacted your father-in-law months ago.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

She continued.

“He wanted access to Lily.”

My hands tightened.

“For what?”

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Money.”

The room became cold.

Of course.

It always came back to money.

My mother-in-law continued:

“Jason found out about the trust.”

Daniel frowned.

“Trust?”

She nodded.

“The money your father left.”

I looked at Daniel.

The same money everyone kept chasing.

The same secret that started this nightmare.

Mark looked at her.

“Why the bear?”

She wiped her tears.

“Because we needed to know if Jason was already close.”

I stared.

“What?”

She explained:

“The camera wasn’t meant for Lily.”

My stomach turned.

“It was meant to catch Jason.”

Silence.

Everyone processed that.

The bear.

The tracker.

The recording.

They were watching for someone else.

But then I remembered.

The call.

The kidnapping.

I looked at her.

“Then why did you take her?”

Her face changed.

“Because Jason found out.”

A pause.

“He knew we were watching.”

My heart stopped.

“And?”

She looked at Lily.

“He came for her.”

I grabbed Lily closer.

“When?”

Her voice trembled.

“The same night she disappeared.”

Everything went silent.

The note.

The car.

The empty room.

It wasn’t my in-laws who took her.

It was Jason.

But then…

Who brought her here?

I looked around.

The answer suddenly became obvious.

Someone was still missing.

The person who knew exactly where Lily was.

The person who had been one step ahead the entire time.

The police officer’s radio suddenly crackled.

“Unit 3, we found a vehicle.”

Everyone turned.

“Whose?”

The officer looked at his screen.

Then his face changed.

“It belongs to…”

A pause.

“Daniel Carter.”

My heart stopped.

I turned toward my husband.

He looked just as shocked.

Because his car…

had been found outside the place where Jason was last seen.

And suddenly the biggest question wasn’t:

Where is Jason?

It was:

May you like

Why was Daniel there?
